contrapposto

Weight shift

Contrapposto is the term used for those statues of human figures in which the hips and legs are turned in a different direction from that of the shoulders and head. You know, the twisting of a figure on its own vertical axis. In this way, the weight of one part of the body counterbalances the other. Thus it is sometimes called "weight shift." This technique, developed late in the ancient Greek period, was a technique for resting a figure's weight on one leg to tilt the body in a realistic pose.

she shifted her weight

"Happiness is equilibrium. Shift your weight. Equilibrium is pragmatic. You have to get everything into proportion. You compensate, rebalance yourself so that you maintain your angle to the world. When the world shifts, you shift." Tom Stoppard

Twisted figure are sometimes twisted just to maintain stability. Like the mind.

COUNTERBALANCE:
1 : a weight that balances another
2 : a force or influence that offsets or checks an opposing force
