walking as a form of meditation Thoreau liked walking in the wilderness because he, too, believed that facts in nature were symbolic of facts in spirit. Thus, taking an outdoor walk was a spiritual event, an allegorical experience where, via symbolic representations in nature, one arrived at an examination of the self. Thoreau says: walking becomes an activity of consciousness, indeed on of the primary tasks of the mind. |
“A
healthy man, indeed, is the complement of the seasons, and in winter,
summer is in his heart.” Thoreau An Everyday Walk or A Walk Every Day Or course Thoreau’s walks were oriented towards the wilderness, on the unexplored versus the domesticated. Even though a walk implies a movement Away From, it is actually a movement towards the self in that only the creative go beyond the limits set by others. The wilderness is a search for the center of the creative being, of consciousness. We seem to search for the wild only to have something to dominate. Civilization follows behind he who walks ahead. |
