A huipil is a blouse of Mayan origin. The Mayans believed that clothing could transform a person just as a person could transform clothing, the two exisitng in symbiosis. Mayans gave their huipils a cosmic significance. Having the head placed in the very centre of the fabric has specific implications. When a woman places a huipil over her head, she enters a symbolic universe. As she sticks her head through the hole, she emerges into the external world and her body becomes the axis of the universe. She is the centre of the world connecting the earth and the sky. |

Way Out Huipils. It's easy to wind up with a collection of unwanted T-shirts that are torn, stained or simply unflattering. But these T-shirts can be transformed into Way Out Huipils, a contemporary version of the traditional Mayan blouse. For our workshop, we will make a Way Out Huipil using old T-shirts and other unwanted clothing as well. These huipils can be embellished with embroidery, permanent markers, applique, etc. To the left is a foto of the back of "freshness is not eternal" huipil. As you can see, it is entirely made from fabric scraps piecemealed together. |
